What Exactly is a “Surge”? (A Critique of John McCain)
Yesterday during an interview, Republican candidate John McCain expressed his support for the war in Iraq.
Let us first examine the definition of a surge according to dictionary.com.
Surge - a strong, wavelike, forward movement, rush, or sweep.
During the short two minute exert of the interview as seen on yahoo.com news section, McCain uses the word surge five times as a reference to the United States military operations in Iraq. While a “surge” is supposedly a strong, forward movement, rush or sweep, I am terribly confused whether John McCain is talking about the same war? The military operations in Iraq have been going on since 2002. That’s a SIX year surge!! It is as if the word “surge” is supposed to create support for the war in Iraq. I guess we should all forget about the last 6 years because apparently we are now surging toward victory….. I disagree.
Second, and these are McCain’s exact words in reference to Barrack Obama, maybe someone can interpret them for me, “He was wrong when he said the surge would not succeed, he was wrong when he said that we were failing in Iraq as a result of the it, and he’s wrong today, when he continues to acknowledge the success that we have experienced.” I know he messed up on the last line of that sentence, but come on this sentence is completely repetitive, mind dullingly stupid and reminds me of George Bush and his idiotic last 8 years of speeches. But theres also more…..
McCain also steals another one of Bush’s tactics, in reference to Barrack Obama’s timetable for removal of the troops McCain believes it will result in “chaos and genocide”. Look the scare tactics are back, I feel like the “terror level” needs to be raised again.
Last but not least, after bashing on Obama’s removal of troops and expressing his everlasting support of the endless “surge”, McCain claims, “I am convinced that we are on the path to victory and that victory means that Americans come home, but come home to honor and victory, not in defeat.” I’m even more confused now.
And the very last thought, at the beginning of the speech McCain states, “The whole debate in this campaign should be about whether we are going to allow that surge to continue to succeed.” Um…. I’m guessing if you care about other topics such as the well being of the American people, the economy, global warming, health care costs, gasoline prices, etc. you might want to see debates about those topics too.
I could go on forever about this 2 minute exert but I need to sleep.
With sincerity and honestly,
Nathan Pater
